  • President Zelensky is scheduled to arrive in Berlin for talks with Chancellor Merz.
  • The meeting will focus on German support for Ukraine and establishing a ceasefire.
  • Plans to discuss a new EU sanctions package against Russia are on the agenda.

According to the Polish Press Agency, President Zelensky will arrive in Berlin on Wednesday to confer with Chancellor Merz. This visit forms part of a broader diplomatic initiative to address the conflict with Russia.

During the meeting, scheduled to take place at the Chancellery, Merz will extend a military welcome to Zelensky. The primary subjects will be German support for Ukraine and efforts towards achieving a ceasefire. Chancellor Merz also intends to reveal plans for a new EU sanctions package targeting Russia.

Later in the afternoon, Zelensky will meet with the President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at Bellevue Palace. These discussions aim to further solidify the cooperation between Ukraine and Germany in light of the ongoing conflict.

Diplomatic efforts for peace

Zelensky's Berlin visit represents another step in diplomatic endeavours to end the war. Germany, as a significant partner of Ukraine in Europe, plays a crucial role in these efforts.

In a Monday interview with WDR Europaforum, Friedrich Merz revealed that four countries — Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States — have authorised Ukraine to target sites in Russia using Western equipment.

The proposed sanctions are designed to increase pressure on the Kremlin to engage in serious negotiations about ending the war. As an EU member, Germany is actively involved in crafting this package.
