In the interview with Sky News, Zelensky was questioned about the rumours that one of Donald Trump's plans to end the war in Ukraine involves Ukraine relinquishing territories conquered by Russia. In exchange, Ukraine would be admitted into NATO.
Zelensky stated that an invitation to NATO would help end the "hot phase of the war." He noted that he would expect the Alliance to recognise Ukraine's borders from 1991.
"If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, the territory of Ukraine, which is under our control, must be covered by the NATO umbrella," he said. "We need to do this quickly. And then, regarding the occupied territories, Ukraine will be able to reclaim them through diplomacy," he added.
He emphasised that the ceasefire would need to guarantee that "Putin does not return" to attempts to seize the rest of Ukraine's territory.
Zelensky expressed a desire to work directly with Trump, emphasizing the need to bypass the multiple influences surrounding him. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the relationship between them from potential harm.
The President of Ukraine stressed that he wants to present "his ideas" to Trump and also wants to become acquainted with the thoughts of the U.S. president-elect.
