Zelensky stands firm: No recognition of Russian-occupied territories

Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken again about the conversation that took place on Tuesday between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The President of Ukraine made it clear that Kyiv will not recognise the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine as part of Russia. He emphasised that this is a "red line" for Ukraine.

During a press conference on his visit to Helsinki, Zelensky was asked about the American-Russian discussions.

Zelensky stated that every negotiation is an opportunity to end the war. However, he noted that the Russians are not yet ready to end the war.

Shortly after the phone call between Trump and Putin in Kyiv, an alert was announced on Tuesday evening. Explosions and anti-aircraft gunfire could be heard.

Journalists asked Zelensky whether Ukraine has any "red lines" in potential discussions with Russia. - He replied that the red line for Ukraine is the recognition of the occupied territories of Ukraine as Russian. Zelensky also added that Ukraine will not agree to this.

Zelensky emphasised that the current priority is achieving a complete ceasefire in the sky and on the ground. He added that Ukraine requires assurances that the war will not return to its territory.

The President of Ukraine also called for the release of thousands of prisoners held in Russia. - He stressed that these are non-negotiable issues.
