Merkel urges diplomacy as key to ending conflict with Russia
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel appealed to Ukraine and its allies to seek diplomatic ways to end the war with Russia, without giving up on other actions.
In an interview cited by "Ukrainska Pravda," Angela Merkel emphasized that Russia cannot win this war.
"This is not only in Ukraine's interest, but also in our own, as we cannot allow Putin to win," stated the former German Chancellor.
Diplomatic solutions
Condemning the Russian invasion as a blatant violation of international law, she simultaneously noted that "diplomatic solutions must always be considered alongside military actions."
Merkel expressed the opinion that diplomatic talks should take place at the appropriate time, although she did not specify when that would be. She also confirmed her support for the German government's actions in helping Ukraine, noting that defeating Russia will be difficult for Ukraine.
