North Korea's cruise missile test heightens regional tensions
North Korea has conducted another missile test by launching cruise missiles towards the Sea of Japan. This is the second such test in May.
On Thursday morning, North Korea's armed forces launched several cruise missiles towards the Sea of Japan. This information was relayed by the South Korean army, emphasizing that it is already Pyongyang's second missile test this month.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that the missile launches were detected at around 8 PM Eastern Time from the area of Sondok in South Hamgyong Province. The missiles fell into the sea, as confirmed by the Yonhap agency.
"The military was aware of the signs of today's missile launch by North Korea and prepared for this eventuality in advance," stated the JCS. Detailed data are currently being analyzed by South Korean and American intelligence agencies.
Political context
Thursday's missile test took place after the previous launch of a short-range ballistic missile on May 8. According to the official KCNA agency, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw this test, aimed at "increasing the military's nuclear counterattack capability." Experts suggest the test may have been linked to weapons intended for Russia.
Analysts also point out that North Korea's missile launches are a political signal directed towards the international community, including the United States. Kim Jong Un underscores the country's ability to deter and repel potential adversaries, illustrating his determination.
Possible consequences
This is yet another instance of such maneuvers by North Korea. Pyongyang's actions could have far-reaching consequences for regional stability. Previously, Japanese Defence Minister Gen Nakatani expressed concern, indicating that the missile may have flown on an "irregular trajectory." Japan lodged a strong protest against Pyongyang, and authorities in Seoul condemned the tests as a "clear act of provocation" threatening peace in the region.
