Putin's impossible terms jeopardize Ukraine diplomacy

"He is now doing everything he can to sabotage diplomacy by setting extremely difficult and unacceptable conditions right from the start even before a ceasefire," Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday expressed his concerns about Vladimir Putin's actions in the context of the war with Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that the Russian leader cannot withdraw from the conflict, which sabotages any attempts to reach a peace agreement.

Putin blocks diplomacy

In a post on the X platform, Zelensky pointed out that Putin imposes highly challenging and unreasonable demands even during the early ceasefire negotiations. He argued that Putin cannot afford to withdraw from the war without losing everything, which is why he is actively undermining diplomatic efforts by setting conditions that are nearly impossible to accept, even before discussions on a ceasefire can progress.

In response to ceasefire proposals, the Ukrainian President cautioned that Putin will likely attempt to engage the international community in prolonged and fruitless negotiations, similar to the Minsk agreements regarding Donbas. He emphasized that every condition set by Putin serves only to obstruct diplomatic efforts, describing this as a typical Russian strategy, something Ukraine has previously warned about.
