Trump's nuclear proposal to Ukraine: Energy security or risk?
Donald Trump has adopted a new tactic in talks with Ukraine. This time, the American politician proposed to the government in Kyiv the takeover of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Volodymyr Zelensky did not completely reject Trump's proposal, although he emphasized that he only discussed the plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is controlled by Russia.
The goal of Donald Trump is to initiate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. The American president also wants to secure as many benefits as possible for the United States. The politician is setting additional conditions and proposals for Ukraine. This time, Volodymyr Zelensky talked with Trump about nuclear power plants.
The proposal involves Americans taking control of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which - according to Donald Trump - would be "the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure."
Volodymyr Zelensky is not saying "no" to the U.S. president's proposal. However, the Ukrainian leader stressed that for now, he has only discussed the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant with Donald Trump. This facility is currently under Russian control.
Trump satisfied with talks with Ukraine and Russia
Donald Trump stated that the one-hour phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky was "very good." This occurred a day after consultations with Vladimir Putin, which (also by phone) Trump conducted to negotiate a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
BBC reports that Volodymyr Zelensky stated after the conversation that lasting peace can be achieved this year under Trump's leadership. However, Putin continues to impose impossible conditions on Ukraine and the United States. The Russian leader rejected the proposals for a complete ceasefire.
