Barcelona's home woes continue as Atletico secures historic win
In the 1-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid, Robert Lewandowski did not add to his goal-scoring tally. After the match, the Polish striker offered his thoughts on yet another loss for FC Barcelona in front of their home crowd.
FC Barcelona controlled the game for most of the match, creating eleven clear goal-scoring opportunities, including hitting the post. However, they only managed to beat the visitors' goalkeeper once.
Diego Simeone's team had just three shots on target, two of which resulted in goals. This marks Atletico's first victory at Barcelona's stadium under Simeone's management, much to the coach's delight.
After the match, the "Blaugrana" players were devastated. Suffering three consecutive defeats at their own stadium prompts deep reflection on the team's shortcomings. The absence of Lamine Yamal and the ineffectiveness of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were evident.
I think a few factors influenced this. We made mistakes, which Atletico capitalised on. We played well, but we didn’t seize our chances. Recently, we lack confidence and calmness in the penalty area. It's a lesson for us - if you can't win, don't lose. This has occurred a few times in this campaign. I believe that in the new year, we'll come back stronger - said Robert Lewandowski, in an interview with Mateusz Święcicki from Eleven Sports.
A sad defeat for the fans
Since the 11th round, Atletico have gained 13 points on Barcelona. The Catalans have secured only 5 points out of a possible 21, distancing them from the top spot. Montjuic Stadium seems to be unlucky for the hosts, and the atmosphere in the stands is subdued.
The season is long. We have experienced ups and downs. With a young team, fluctuations in form are to be expected. It's a lesson for us. We lacked the finishing touch. The break might allow us to draw conclusions and avoid such mistakes in the future. I think the dressing room is frustrated - added Lewandowski.
