Homeland security launches major crackdown in New York
The Department of Homeland Security has commenced an immigration operation in New York, arresting individuals with criminal charges. "Dirtbags like this will continue to be removed from our streets," stated Secretary Kristi Noem, head of the department.
Newly appointed Secretary Noem announced the start of the operation on platform X. The head of the Department of Homeland Security released a video showing the arrest of an individual charged with kidnapping, assault, and burglary. "Dirtbags like this will continue to be removed from our streets," she wrote.
The identity of the detainee remains unknown. An ICE spokesperson, whose service is responsible for conducting the operation, declined to comment on the individual seen in the video, according to "The New York Times." Noem herself travelled to New York for the operation, where she oversees the agents' activities.
Deportations in New York
Other agencies, such as the DEA and ATF, also participated in the operation. Social media photos indicate that many individuals have been detained. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has not yet commented on the situation, reports the newspaper.
The operation in New York is part of a broader Trump administration campaign, which includes actions across the country. Since the beginning of Trump's term, ICE has arrested over 3,500 individuals, with 1,179 in a single day.
ICE's actions have raised controversy, particularly regarding additional arrests of individuals who were not direct targets of the operation. Thomas Homan, head of ICE responsible for border actions, emphasises that the focus is on individuals who threaten public safety.
Kristi Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, was confirmed as secretary on Saturday after her nomination was approved by the Senate. Her task is to lead counter-terrorism efforts and oversee immigration operations. Noem describes illegal immigration as an "invasion," reminds "The New York Times."
