Cortisol plays a crucial role in our daily battle with tension and pressure. Excess or deficiency of this hormone can have serious health consequences, including the so-called "cortisol face." How can you recognise it?

Cortisol is one of the main hormones in our body, produced by the adrenal cortex. Its level can increase due to stress, lack of sleep, and even past infections. Unfortunately, it can affect metabolic processes, raising blood sugar levels. So, how can we address this?

"Cortisol face" - what does it look like?

One of the most noticeable symptoms of excess cortisol is the so-called "cortisol face." It is characterised by dark circles around the eyes, swelling, and smoothening of facial features. These changes result from water retention in the body and decreased collagen production, which affects the skin's elasticity.

Not everyone knows elevated cortisol can contribute to fat accumulation around the face, arms, and abdomen. Women struggling with this problem may also face menstrual cycle disturbances and mood swings. That is why regulating cortisol levels can have a tangible impact on our appearance and how we feel.

"Cortisol face" on TikTok

There are numerous videos on TikTok where users discuss "cortisol face." Some of them even claim that their appearance has changed due to stress and excessive responsibilities. But is this the case?

"Chronic high cortisol levels can lead to facial changes, but such pronounced effects are not commonly seen outside of significant medical conditions. In most cases, everyday stress does not elevate cortisol to the levels needed to produce such a dramatic physical change," said Dr Vijay Murthy, in an interview with Healthline.
