Katy Perry joins historic all‑female crew for space mission
Katy Perry is embarking on a space journey as part of a historic all-female crew aboard the Blue Origin rocket. The launch is scheduled for the spring of this year.
The renowned singer Katy Perry will participate in the first mission, which will feature an entirely female crew aboard the Blue Origin rocket. As part of the New Shepard project, led by Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, alongside other women in science, will ascend above the Kármán line, which is recognised as the boundary of outer space. The mission aspires to inspire future generations to explore space. The flight will give them the experience of weightlessness and breathtaking views of Earth.
Katy Perry: I'm in the blue sisters group
"If you had told me that I would be part of the first ever all-female crew in space, I would have believed you," she announced on her Instagram. "I am honored to be among this diverse group of celestial sisters."
The launch is scheduled for the spring of this year, and it will be directed by Lauren Sánchez, an American journalist, writer, and philanthropist who gained fame as an entertainment reporter and news presenter. She is a licensed pilot and the founder of Black Ops Aviation. In 2023, she became engaged to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, founder of Blue Origin. The crew will include: Aisha Bowe, CEO of STEMBoard and a former NASA rocket specialist, film producer Kerianne Flynn, "CBS Mornings" co-host Gayle King, and scientist Amanda Nguyen.
The first all-female space mission
New Shepard Mission NS-31 will be the first mission to outer space with an entirely female crew since 1963, when the first woman, astronaut Valentina Tereshkova, went into space.
Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket is a reusable launch vehicle with a crew capsule that cannot orbit Earth but rises above the Kármán line - recognised as the boundary of outer space, which is located at an altitude of 100 kilometres. These missions last about 11 minutes, during which passengers can experience about 4 minutes of weightlessness and admire the view of Earth from space through the large windows of the New Shepard - reports Blue Origin.
Blue Origin rocket flights are fully autonomous, without pilots
Blue Origin rockets have no pilots, as their flights are fully autonomous. Missions organised by Blue Origin are not new to celebrities—actor William Shatner and former NFL player Michael Strahan have participated in them in the past.
Blue Origin hopes that Katy Perry's involvement in this mission and the success of the entire endeavour will inspire younger generations to reach for the stars, both literally and figuratively.
