Russian and chinese aircraft intercepted in Alaska ADIZ by NORAD

Two Russian and two Chinese military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defence Identification Zone were intercepted on Wednesday by fighters from the United States and Canadian Air Forces, according to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).

"NORAD detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two PRC H-6 military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on July 24, 2024. NORAD fighter jets from the United States and Canada conducted the intercept," according to a press release from the US-Canadian unit.

It was added that the Russian and Chinese aircraft "remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace." It was also emphasised that "This Russian and PRC activity in the Alaska ADIZ is not seen as a threat". At the same time, NORAD forces will continue to monitor the activity of these countries' aircraft near North America and "respond to their presence."

NORAD reminds us that the Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined section of international airspace that requires ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security.

NORAD is a binational command of the United States and Canada. The unit uses a layered defence network consisting of satellites, ground-based and onboard radars, and fighters to detect and track aircraft and inform the relevant actions.
