Russian nuclear icebreaker damaged while rescuing Arctic ship
The Russian nuclear icebreaker "50 Years of Victory" sustained damage while freeing another vessel trapped in Arctic waters.
The press service of Rosatomflot reported that the nuclear-powered icebreaker "50 Years of Victory" damaged its side in the Kara Sea, according to the Kremlin agency RIA Novosti, which did not publish photos of the damaged vessel. The accident was reported to have occurred on the night of 26th January.
Incident in the Arctic
However, photos from the scene have appeared online, clearly showing a hole in the upper part of the icebreaker's side. The hole is above the waterline, allowing the vessel to continue its duties.
The icebreaker's operator stated in a communication that it has been clarified that there are no casualties, navigation capabilities have not been lost, and there is no threat to the life support systems or the reactor installation.
The incident reportedly occurred during the release of another vessel trapped in the Arctic.
