Trump reshuffles inner circle: Waltz to UN, Rubio steps in
The US President, Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that Mike Waltz, who has been serving as the National Security Advisor, will become the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Meanwhile, Marco Rubio will assume the role of National Security Advisor.
As Donald Trump stated on Thursday, Mike Waltz, who has been serving as the National Security Advisor, will become the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
"I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations," wrote the US President on the Truth Social platform.
"From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role," emphasised Trump, adding that Marco Rubio will temporarily fulfil the role of National Security Advisor, combining it with his current position.
"Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN," Trump also declared in his post.
Media on Mike Waltz's dismissal
Earlier on Thursday, CBS News and Fox News reported that Mike Waltz and his deputy are leaving their positions, which was attributed to an earlier leak of conversations on Signal.
With his post, Trump confirmed reports of Waltz's dismissal, a former commando and congressman from Florida. His position in the White House had significantly weakened since the Signalgate scandal - Waltz mistakenly invited the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a group chat with senior government officials about planned strikes in Yemen. Just three days earlier, in an interview with Goldberg, Trump had insisted that Waltz's position was secure.
Media outlets, including The Washington Post, reported that despite public support for Waltz, Trump was furious with his advisor but did not immediately dismiss him, as he did not want to yield to media pressure on this matter. According to The New York Times, Waltz had recently advocated imposing strong sanctions on Russia in response to Russia's resistance in peace negotiations.
