Ukraine strikes Russian command in Kursk to deter attacks
The Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted a precise attack on a Russian command post in the Kursk region, partially controlled by Kyiv since August 2024. The goal, as conveyed by the Ukrainian army, was to weaken Russia's capability to carry out terrorist acts against Ukrainian civilians.
The Ukrainian army attacked the Russian command post in the Kursk region, in the village of Maryino.
The General Staff of Ukraine reported that the attack was carried out with all precautions taken to minimise the threat to civilians. "These strikes disrupt the ability of the Russian Federation to conduct terrorism against innocent Ukrainian civilians," the statement stressed.
Situation in the Kursk region
Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region on 6th August 2024, which was intended to force the Russians to divert some forces from Donbas. By the end of August, Kyiv controlled roughly 1,240 square kilometres of this region, but since September, Ukrainian forces have started losing ground to the Russian counteroffensive. By November, they controlled only about 800 square kilometres.
According to Western sources, Russians in the Kursk region are supported by over 10,000 soldiers from North Korea. The General Staff of Ukraine announced further actions aimed at identifying and destroying Russian military command facilities.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine will continue operations to seek and destroy the military command of the Russian terrorist regime," the statement emphasised.
