Venice curbs crowds with online-only Basilica access
From 1st July, entry to St. Mark's Basilica in Venice will only be possible with a prior online reservation. The ticket price will increase from €6 to €10. These changes aim to limit excessive tourism, a growing problem in this historic city.
Tickets to the basilica will be personalised to prevent resale. Ticket holders will also have the opportunity to visit 40 other historic churches in Venice. The basilica's administrator, Bruno Barel, emphasised that "the pricing is in line with other similar sites in Italy and beyond".
Exceptions from charges
Not everyone will have to pay to visit St. Mark's Basilica. Certain exceptions are in place.
Free entry to the basilica will be available for school trips accompanied by teachers, children under 10, and residents of the Venetian diocese. This is an essential accommodation for the local community and young tourists.
Experiment with entry fees to Venice
An experiment with entry fees to the city is also ongoing in Venice. On selected days, from April 18th to July 27th, tourists must register their visits and pay between €5 and €10 if they do not plan to stay overnight. These fees apply on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and apply to individuals aged 14 and above.
