Archaeologists uncover poignant remains of Vesuvius victims in Pompeii

A group of archaeologists has made a significant discovery in Pompeii. The remains of two victims of the volcanic eruption nearly two thousand years ago have been unearthed.

The archaeologists have been working in the cities within the region of modern-day Campania in Italy. The remains were found in the Ninth Region of Pompeii. Earlier excavations at this site revealed a bakery, residential buildings, and rooms adorned with small drawings.

The remains of the two individuals were discovered in a small, enclosed room, which archaeologists believe was a bedroom. Experts suggest it was chosen as a refuge during the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.

According to experts, volcanic material likely did not penetrate the bedroom. However, archaeologists believe the pair were trapped inside and perished when buried.

The woman's body was found on the bed. "Everyone noticed that she had with her a small treasure of gold, silver, and bronze coins, as well as jewellery, including a pair of gold and pearl earrings," states the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

Researchers stress that such discoveries are very significant as they provide crucial insights into the lives of ancient city inhabitants. Through these findings, archaeologists can reconstruct the final moments of the local population before the disaster, as well as the places where they lived.

It is worth noting that in AD 79, when the city was buried under ash and lava from the eruption of Vesuvius, Pompeii had around 20,000 inhabitants.
