Lily care tips: Prolonging bloom and prepping for next season

Lilies are extraordinary plants with beautiful flowers. However, their downside is their extremely short blooming period. There is, however, a trick that will ensure colourful petals reappear on the stems in the next season.

Lilies are known for their large, impressive flowers, which come in a variety of colours, from white through pink to red and orange. They bloom on tall, straight stems that can reach up to 5 feet in height. Lily flowers have six petals, and their shapes can vary from trumpet-like to bowl-shaped. 

It is worth knowing that although lilies are considered easy to care for, they require well-draining, fertile soil and a sunny or partly shaded position. Avoid places where water accumulates, as excess moisture can lead to bulb rot. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, and proper fertilisation are crucial for the healthy growth of these beautiful plants. 

Lilies usually bloom from late spring to early summer, sometimes even late summer, depending on the variety. The blooming period generally lasts 2-3 weeks. Observing the flowers and removing the faded inflorescences is essential to prevent seed formation, which can weaken the plant.

If you have garden lilies, you must be careful not to let them dry out. During high heat, remember to water them regularly. Otherwise, the plant may lose all its petals overnight.

After blooming, garden lilies remove only the wilted flowers, leaving the green stems. They are crucial for regenerating the bulbs after blooming and preparing the plant for winter. Only in late autumn, when the stems have completely yellowed, cut them low to the ground. A phosphorus-rich fertiliser is also worth applying at the end of the growing season, as it will help flower formation in the coming year.

It is worth mentioning that digging up lilies for the winter is not necessary. This plant generally withstands low temperatures well, but it is worth protecting it additionally, e.g., with straw or mulch. The exception is sensitive oriental lilies, which should be dug up in autumn and the bulbs stored in appropriate conditions.
