Record-breaking electricity consumption in Croatia as heat waves continue
Croatian power transmission system operator HOPS has reported a new record for electricity consumption. According to N1 television, on Tuesday at 19:00, consumption reached 3341 megawatt hours. This surge is attributed to the extreme heat waves affecting the tourist hotspot for several days.
The tourist season in Croatia is becoming increasingly intense, and air conditioning devices are being used more frequently—not only in tourist facilities but also in offices and apartments.
Therefore, it is expected that this will not be the last record for hourly electricity consumption.
Extreme heat waves in Croatia
Exceptionally high temperatures have been prevailing in Croatia for almost two weeks. In some parts of the country, the highest weather alerts remain. As a result of the heat, a new sea temperature record has been set. On Wednesday, deformations were recorded on railway tracks along the Croatian coast.
Nevertheless, HOPS assures that the availability of the transmission network is not threatened. The operator emphasises that no problems with electricity supplies are to be expected. Croatia meets its energy demand through domestic power plants and imports.
Nearly half of the energy comes from the Croatian part of the Krsko nuclear power plant, which Croatia shares with Slovenia.
