Trump halts military aid to Ukraine, urges peace efforts
The US President, Donald Trump, has decided to halt military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to encourage them towards peace. A White House representative confirmed the decision, stating that even the equipment already in Poland will be stopped.
A White House representative confirmed that President Donald Trump has halted all military aid to Ukraine. The decision is intended to ensure Ukraine contributes to resolving the conflict peacefully.
The president has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution, stated a White House representative, as quoted by the Polish Press Agency.
Fox News initially reported the suspension of aid before it was officially confirmed. The suspension applies to all forms of aid, including arms already en route to Ukraine, some of which are also in Poland. The decision was announced a few hours after Trump publicly claimed he "hadn't even talked about it." The US President accused the Ukrainian president of not wanting peace, in contrast to Vladimir Putin.
During Tuesday's address to the joint session of Congress, Trump announced an upcoming minerals agreement with Ukraine. Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick mentioned that the agreement will soon be signed, which "will lead to a strong, long-term economic partnership between the United States and Ukraine."
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasised that a condition for signing the agreement is Ukraine's willingness to reach a peace agreement, added the Polish Press Agency.
The Trump administration has not passed any new military aid packages for Ukraine but has permitted the flow of arms as part of the last package approved by Joe Biden.
Trump still has the authority to transfer arms worth approximately £3.3 billion to Kyiv. During Friday's meeting with President Zelensky, he declared that aid would continue, although he expressed hope that it wouldn't be needed in large quantities.
