The gala took place on Thursday, 11 July, at the Dolby Theatre. During the event, Prince Harry received the Pat Tillman Award for Service for his work with war veterans. The news of the award given to Meghan Markle's husband did not sit well with many people, causing a scandal online. Among those who commented on the issue was the mother of a deceased soldier, to whose memory the gala was dedicated.

During his speech on stage, the Duke of Sussex spoke about his mother, Princess Diana. The media captured the moment when a small plane was seen flying over the venue, trailing a large banner directed specifically at Prince William's brother.
