European championships trigger mass border checks and arrests
German police have conducted over a million border controls in connection with the ongoing European Football Championships in the country. From 7 to 27 June alone, 4,659 illegal attempts were detected.

About one-third were reported at the borders with France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Denmark. This number included 346 people who had previously been deported and received a re-entry ban to the country.
Moreover, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the police executed 603 open arrest warrants, denied entry to 86 hooligans, and temporarily arrested 150 smugglers.
During the same period, 85 people were detained in connection with politically motivated crime, including those from the Islamist spectrum.
Who was detained by German police?
Among those detained were individuals suspected of serious crimes, including two suspected of causing death. The police also often intervened in unpaid bills in restaurants and clubs.
During our temporary border controls, many arrest warrants have already been executed and hooligans have been prevented from entering the country. We are also monitoring the borders with Denmark, the Benelux countries, and France - said the Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser.
For security and migration policy reasons, border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland will be extended until 15 December 2024. Controls on the border with Austria will last until 11 November 2024.
